POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Special Education Specialist will maintain an intimate knowledge of special education practices, laws, and procedures. This role requires maintaining relationships with partner schools to collect, coordinate, and distribute special education information, respond to stakeholder questions and develop cooperative solutions for students. The Senior Special Education Specialist will support Michigan Virtual staff in providing support services to students with IEP and/or 504 plans in our online, asynchronous environment as well as ensure compliance to Special Education guidelines and laws. Concurrently, this position is responsible for supporting Michigan Virtual instructional staff in appropriate application of accommodations designated for enrolled students. Additionally, there is a desire to extend opportunities for professional development to our school partners in the design and implementation of appropriate accommodations to support students in an asynchronous online environment. 

• Master’s degree
• Holds a current and valid teaching certificate in the State of Michigan with both Special Education and secondary general education endorsements

• Two or more years of experience with teaching online courses 
• Preferred certification is LD or CI
• Experience interpreting special education and 504 accommodation for an online environment
• Experience providing unique guidance and support to classroom teachers in supporting student accommodations in an online learning environment

• Team player with superior customer service skills as well as capacity to engage in critical thinking and analysis of programs and service delivery.
• Demonstrated superior abilities in verbal and written communication, as well as, presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate teamwork, build a positive work environment and effectively work in cross-functional teams.
• Demonstrated decision-making ability to assess all alternatives before making commitments, while carefully evaluating potential risks.
• Proven problem-solving skills that demonstrate the ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems before they reach a critical stage; effectively solves problems rather than symptoms.
• Ability to creatively develop innovative approaches and solutions to work issues and situations.
• Working knowledge of Google Applications for Education and Microsoft Office applications.
• Working knowledge of MICHIGAN VIRTUAL learning applications, student information, enrollment management and reports systems.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of stakeholders, students, teachers, and staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

• The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting.
• Sit in a seated or standing position in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
• Ability to see and hear, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to travel at least 300 miles on a given day.
