Southern Teachers is assisting New Vistas School in the search for its next Head of School. The school has named an internal Interim Head who has agreed to serve in the role until a new Head of School is identified, no later than July 2020.
Founded in 1986, New Vistas School (NVS) is an independent, non-profit day school focused on the needs of students with learning differences brought on by ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, or other specific learning disabilities. NVS works to develop students’ talents and potential both inside and outside of the classroom. Class sizes are typically between two to six students and teachers instill confidence through care. NVS is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and licensed by the Virginia Department of Education.
New Vistas was founded to serve students who learn differently by teaching differently. Though the school uses well-researched strategies such as the Orton-Gillingham approach, what differentiates the NVS program is that it is highly individualized. Each student has a learning plan. Progress is monitored regularly, and instruction is adjusted to serve the student, made possible by the school’s 4:1 student-teacher ratio. Approximately half of NVS students are placed by their public school district and half enroll privately. NVS students leave well-prepared for the challenges ahead; 90% of NVS graduates have pursued higher education opportunities.
Candidates for the Head of School position should hold a graduate degree, Virginia teaching licensure (or credentials to receive such licensure), and an understanding both of students who learn differently and best practices for their instruction. New Vistas seeks candidates with teaching experience working with a similar population of students as well as prior successful administrative responsibility. Applicants must demonstrate a dedication to students, parents, and teachers and the proven ability to continue the warm, personalized culture of a school focused on individualized learning.
