Description: The College of Education (COE) at Seattle University seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor to join the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Social Justice informed by socio-cultural, critical, and inclusive perspectives. This individual will have opportunities to teach and support teacher education courses and field experiences. The faculty member in this position will also contribute to the development of new and revised educator preparation programs and endorsement pathways. In addition to teaching courses in special education and social foundations/critical race in education, the position includes teaching COE courses across programs that prepare educators in different roles to support the needs of students with disabilities to thrive in inclusive school and community environments.
Responsibilities include teaching, research, service, and program development. Teaching activities include course and/or curriculum design, instructional delivery, continuous improvement activities, and student advising. The teaching workload will focus primarily on inclusive special education, social foundations, culturally responsive teaching, and critical race in education within a context of equity, inclusion and culturally sustaining pedagogies. Research that engages and connects to practice and informs the profession is highly valued and supported. Service may include developing relationships collaboratively with external partners, program activities such as reviewing admissions files, conducting program information sessions/admissions interviews, participating in academic advising, and sharing responsibility with faculty for general program operations.
Ideal candidates must demonstrate an understanding of, commitment to, and ability to teach to Seattle University’s Jesuit mission.
Doctoral degree in Special Education or a related field with emphasis in Social Foundations, Critical Race in Education or Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies.
Minimum of three years teaching experience or equivalent in PreK-12 schools.
Experience teaching special education K-12.
Demonstrated knowledge of equitable teaching practices, curriculum, assessment, and instruction and support of inclusive, student-engaged classroom communities.
Ability to work and teach collaboratively in team settings.
Evidence of experience in urban or diverse settings.
Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, diversity, and social justice.
Experience and demonstrated capacity to support strong academic development and critical literacies of students with diverse abilities, strengths, and needs.
Experience and demonstrated capacity to work with multi-lingual or bi-lingual students.
Endorsement in special education.
Demonstration of socio-cultural approaches in classrooms and schools.
Capacity to integrate technology into teaching.
Successful experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate teacher preparation courses.
Experience with program development and assessment.
