In collaboration with Area Education Agencies (AEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), and using an itinerant model, the Orientation and Mobility Specialist provides direct and consultative orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairments, in their local school and home settings.
Formulates appropriate educational objective, activities, evaluation, goals, and instruction.
Reports student growth and programs to parents periodically.
Participates as a member of multidisciplinary teams; involved with evaluations; educational planning.
Full-time, School-year appointment. Position starts Fall 2018. Service region covers Ottumwa, IA and surrounding area. The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa on a daily basis required. Criminal and other relevant background checks also required. Salary and Benefits:
Salary will be determined by the successful applicant’s educational and teaching experience. (BA degree - $44,897-$69,658; MA degree – $52,701-$81,255). Comprehensive benefit package.
Bachelor’s degree in orientation and mobility plus experience using a computer and other office equipment required. Candidates must meet State of Iowa orientation and mobility specialist licensure requirements by the time of appointment. The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa on a daily basis also required. Master’s degree in orientation and mobility and experience with school-age children preferred.

Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired / Iowa Braille School is governed by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. Our agency provides leadership in the field of vision in the State of Iowa through an inter-governmental agreement. We provide services to children in Iowa who are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind, or multi-handicapped with a visual impairment, from birth through age twenty-one. Itinerant Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) and Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) serve students throughout the state, delivering instruction to children in their local public schools, private schools and at times in the home setting.
