The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a nationally prominent scholar and visionary leader to be the director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG). FPG is an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to improving the lives of young children and youth through the study of their families, childcare, and schools. The Director has responsibilities for promoting and overseeing research, professional development, technical assistance, implementation science, and grant-development activities.
FPG (http://fpg.unc.edu), founded in 1966, conducts research to make a difference in children’s lives, support families, and inform public policy. Today, it is one of the nation's oldest and largest multidisciplinary centers devoted to “advancing knowledge and enhancing lives” of children and youth and their families. It has long been known as one of best places in the country for the training of doctoral and post-doctoral students interested in applied quantitative and qualitative research related to children, families, and schools.
About 300 researchers, implementation and technical assistance specialists, faculty fellows, staff, and students work on more than 69 projects related to developmental disabilities; early care and education; physical and social health; professional development, technical assistance, and implementation science; public policy and evaluation, with a focus on racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity.
The Director will:
- bring distinction to the Institute and set a standard of excellence for its programs through his or her own exemplary contributions to research, education, and service;
- provide leadership and management for a staff of approximately 300, including 54 externally-supported investigators and 25 Faculty Fellows;
- work with an Executive Leadership Board and external constituencies to extend the Institute’s influence, broaden its sources of funding, and enhance its reputation;
- build vigorous partnerships, nationally and internationally, with institutions, government agencies, and private-sector groups to advance the goals of the Institute;
- promote inter-disciplinary collaboration and intellectual exchange, establishing strong, working relations with other centers and departments;
- inspire progressive social change by influencing public policy and by advocating, nationally and internationally, for the welfare of children and families.
The Director will have a faculty appointment in an appropriate academic department at UNC Chapel Hill. The successful candidate will have a Doctoral degree in Child Development, Early Intervention, Psychology, Special Education or a related disciple. He or she should have previous administrative experience and exhibit the breadth of intellect, imagination, and communications skill necessary to articulate a compelling vision for the Institute and its goals. He or she also will demonstrate a record of excellence in research, a commitment to fostering inter-disciplinary research, policy experience affecting children and families, an ability to work with external boards and constituents to develop new sources of support, knowledge of national trends in research funding, an understanding of the role of outreach and technical assistance in a large, interdisciplinary institute, and a commitment to increasing cultural diversity among investigators and students.
